Iguén de Guaraguao unfolds across four sculptural panels as a tactile meditation
on lineage, memory, and continuity.
Each carries its own rhythm and identity, while together they form a monumental composition of texture, pattern, and connection.
Genesis
The work is inspired by ancestral Caribbean traditions of weaving and cordage, where cotton, yute, maguey, and hemp were shaped into textiles, agricultural tools, ropes, rigging, and sails. These woven forms connect the island's Indigenous cultures with the vessels that later carried new civilizations across the sea. Its title invokes the guaraguao, a watchful native hawk, from whose circling perspective land, sea, and history appear as strands woven across time.
